Hawks

I've been seeing a lot of hawks in the neighborhood, lately. Mostly red tails. I saw one today perched on  the Harvard gates across from the foot bridge. I saw one atop the "May I take your order?" kiosk at a Burger King drive-thru near Fresh Pond a few years ago—fearless! Later today, I'm going to try to take a picture of one that roosts near the BU bridge.

I don't know enough about hawks, but I am looking forward to spending more time with this interesting resource from the Hawk Migration Association of North America. A nifty slide-show guide to identifying hawks in flight.

Happy Birthday, Charles Darwin!

Stumbling upon a cactus-eating tortoise would certainly be a treat but that's not going to happen to me any time soon. Instead, I'm here to celebrate what's poking up between the cracks in the sidewalks and the along footpaths of the Charles River.

"I trust and believe that the time spent in this voyage," wrote Charles Darwin as he set off his five-year exploration on board the Beagle "… will produce its full worth in Natural History; and it appears to me the doing what little one can to increase the general stock of knowledge is as respectable an object of life, as one can in any likelihood pursue."

I won't be adding to the general stock. I'm no CD — just an amateur enthusiast, but I hope to entertain you and call your attention to some of the many little marvels around us.
